4-Day Rwanda Gorillas and Bisoke Volcano Hike Tour

Upon arrival in Kigali, meet your professional driver-guide for an introduction to your adventure. Begin the scenic drive north toward the Musanze region, passing Rwanda's rolling green hills, cultivated slopes and rural communities. Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a short stop along the way before continuing to your selected lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Check in, enjoy lunch if timing permits and take time to settle into the mountain surroundings.

In the afternoon, review the arrangements for your gorilla trek and Mount Bisoke hike. Your guide can help you check your hiking clothing, waterproof layers, sturdy boots, drinking water and other essentials. Enjoy dinner and a restful evening, as the following two days will involve guided activities that require energy and preparation.

Transport: Kigali to the Musanze/Volcanoes National Park area by road, approximately 105–115 km and around 2–3 hours, depending on traffic, route and stops.

Start early with breakfast before transferring to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. Park staff will assign your trekking group and explain the rules for approaching and observing the gorillas. Accompanied by specialist guides and trackers, enter the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek can involve steep slopes, muddy paths, dense vegetation and several hours of walking, depending on the group's location.

Once the gorillas are located, enjoy the permitted observation period, generally up to one hour, while watching their interactions, feeding behavior and family dynamics. Follow your guide's instructions and maintain the required distance. After the trek, return to the starting point and transfer to your lodge for lunch or refreshments, depending on timing. Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for the following day's Mount Bisoke hike.

Transport: Lodge-to-park transfers by pop-up 4x4 vehicle, followed by a guided forest trek on foot. Trekking duration and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Rise early for breakfast before transferring to the designated park meeting point for your Mount Bisoke hiking briefing. Meet your authorized mountain guide and follow the required park procedures before beginning the ascent. The trail climbs through changing vegetation, from forested slopes to higher-altitude terrain. As you gain elevation, the path can become steep, muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Take regular breaks, maintain a steady pace and follow your guide's instructions throughout the hike.

If weather, trail conditions and your physical condition permit, continue toward the summit crater lake at approximately 3,711 metres above sea level. Enjoy the remarkable volcanic scenery before beginning the descent with your guide. The hike commonly takes around 6–8 hours in total, although duration varies with fitness, conditions and the pace of the group. After returning to the trailhead, transfer to your lodge for refreshments, dinner and a well-earned rest.

Transport: Road transfers between the lodge and the designated hiking starting point by pop-up 4x4 vehicle, followed by a guided hike on foot. Summit access is subject to weather, safety conditions and park authorization.

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge and take time to recover after your mountain hike. Depending on your departure schedule, you may enjoy the surrounding scenery or take a short, gentle walk near the lodge before checking out. Your driver-guide will coordinate the return journey, allowing time for comfort stops and a relaxed drive through Rwanda's green countryside.

Arrive in Kigali and transfer to Kigali International Airport, your hotel or another agreed drop-off point. Lunch can be arranged depending on your departure time and package inclusions. If you are flying internationally on the same day, ensure your departure time allows adequate travel and airport check-in time. Your four-day adventure concludes with memories of mountain gorillas, volcanic landscapes and the personal achievement of attempting the Mount Bisoke hike.
